Vaasa Central Hospital is a 400-bed medical facility serving as the key general hospital for the inhabitants of the city of Vaasa and the surrounding communes.

In the process of modernizing the hospital, the location of all medical departments and technical and service units – together with the patient, staff, and materiel traffic – were reconsidered and partly reorganized in the new Master Plan. The first implementation phase consisted of the construction of a new examination and treatment building for operating theatres, X-ray department, intensive and coronary care, and emergency and outpatient services. The second phase consisted of the construction of a new ward and OPD-building and the new main lobby. The buildings adjoin the existing ward and OPD-building, which was, together with the other existing buildings, renovated in the following renovation phases. To guarantee the modernized hospital’s optimal functionality, a new power plant and a new central storage building were also built, and the underground service tunnel network was enlarged.
