Assignment: New hospital building
Architect: Chief architects Mikael Paatela and IPPR
Client: Ca. 125,000 cu.m
Year: Design in 1996-1997, Completed in 2001

The new hospital complex is a 900-bed university hospital located on an existing hospital site in downtown Beijing next to the Imperial Palace. Half of the site was cleared to make room for the modern health facility, and only the old ward buildings were left in place to be renovated. The new building houses e.g., an operating theatre department with 17 operating theatres, a day-surgery unit, X-ray and radiotherapy departments, intensive and coronary-care units, a laboratory, a blood bank and a rehabilitation unit together with special VIP facilities and all the necessary service units. The logistic networks for staff, patient, visitor and service traffic are – as far as possible – at different floor levels to quarantee optimal functioning and high hygienic standards in each department.

The project was carried out in co-operation with the Chinese Institute of Project Planning and Research (IPPR), which was responsible for the design of facades, production of tender documents and for construction supervision.
