SULEIMANIYAH GENERAL HOSPITAL

Assignment: New hospital building
Architect: Chief architect Mikael Paatela
Client: World Health Organization (WHO), Geneva
Volume: Ca. 150,000 cu.m.
Year: Design in 2000, project

In the process of developing the health services in Suleimaniyah, the consultant conducted a feasibility study including the type, amount and quality of health services in the region. The consultant also assessed the need for modern health services and made a proposal for the medical and technical program and the functions of the new health facility. In the second phase, based on this, the consultant made a Master Plan and sketch drawings for a 400-bed general hospital with all the necessary modern medical examination, treatment, and care facilities. Due to the climatic and seismic conditions in the area, the cultural heritage and the need for future enlargement and flexibility of the building – typically fulfilled by modern hospital design – the building is a low-rise pavilion-type hospital complex with inner courtyards and surrounding gardens.
