The 30-year-old Luganville District Hospital is responsible for the highest (tertiary) level medical care for the 108 000 inhabitants of the northern provinces of this island nation in the Pacific. The consultant assessed the services of the health-care delivery network in the area. The consultant also drew up a development plan for the 150-bed hospital indicating the nature and quantity of medical services it will need to provide. The hospital will be enlarged and renovated on the basis of this development plan. New facilities will be constructed for operating theatre department, intensive care unit, and instrument sterilization services; in addition, administration, education, and supporting services such as laundry, kitchen and central storage will receive new facilities. The OPD, emergency, X-ray and laboratory buildings as well as wards will be renovated. Since the hospital needs to be continuously in operation, the implementation of the development plan will be carried out in phases.
