With the 2400 beds, outpatient clinics and all major medical specialities the hospital is the largest hospital and main teaching hospital complex in Sri Lanka. The site of the Hospital covers 21 acres with several old and new buildings. In the Master Plan-project the locations of all examination and treatment buildings and the wards were reconsidered and partly reorganized with the aim of obtaining maximum functionality of the hospital. The partial reorganization of the supporting service facilities and the main networks for patient, staff, visitor and material traffic was carried out. Based on this plan the rebuilding and reconstruction of the hospital has been carried out in phases.
